Cubic boron nitride (CBN) is a new type of superhard material, which is synthesized by artificial method, and its hardness is second only to diamond. It uses hexagonal boron nitride as raw material, and through the action of catalyst, it transforms hexagonal boron nitride into cubic boron nitride under high temperature and high pressure.
Cubic boron nitride is usually black, brown or dark red crystals, but also white, gray or yellow products appear, mainly depending on the catalyst used in the synthesis. For example, when nitride is used as catalyst, CBN product is almost colorless.
Synthesis temperature, synthesis pressure, type and proportion of catalyst, crystallization degree of hexagonal boron nitride, uniformity of mixture, uniformity of temperature and pressure environment, moisture, boron oxide and other impurities will affect the synthesis effect of cubic boron nitride. The size of cubic boron nitride single crystal is generally 30 ~ 90 μ M.
The hardness of cubic boron nitride is comparable to that of synthetic diamond, ranking second only to diamond; its temperature resistance is as high as 1500 ~ 1600 ℃, and its stability in high temperature is better than that of synthetic diamond, so it is suitable for use as superhard material. Moreover, cubic boron nitride has high chemical stability to ferrous metals and is suitable for cutting tools.
The main uses of CBN are as tools, abrasives and abrasives. Because of its high hardness, good thermal stability, chemical stability and thermal conductivity, CBN is an ideal tool material, which is suitable for processing various kinds of hrc45 ~ 70 quenched steel, wear-resistant cast iron, thermal spraying material, alloy steel, high temperature alloy and other materials.
